Life can get overwhelming. Between work, family, and all the unexpected challenges that pop up, it’s easy to feel like there’s no room left for God. I’ve been there. Recently, I started a new job at a new church, moved to another state, and spent weeks packing and now unpacking boxes. It was chaos! But here’s what I learned: those seasons when life feels the most hectic are when we need God the most.
Let’s talk about some practical ways to stay connected to Him, even when life feels overwhelming.
We all know that feeling when your to-do list seems endless. For me, it was standing in the middle of our new living room, surrounded by unopened boxes, trying to figure out where to start. It’s easy in those moments to think, “I’ll spend time with God once things settle down.” But here’s the truth—life doesn’t always settle down. And the amazing thing about God? He’s ready to meet us right in the middle of our mess.
During all the chaos, I felt a tug to pause and pray. It wasn’t long—just a simple, “God, I need Your peace right now.” That small moment reminded me that I wasn’t carrying all this alone. Moments like these show us how God’s presence is available no matter how busy we feel.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
That invitation is for the middle of our chaos, not just when everything is calm.
Practical Steps to Deepen Your Relationship with God
Let’s learn some practical things that helped me stay connected with God during my busiest season.
1. Prioritize Time with God
I know it sounds hard, but carving out even 10-15 minutes can make a big difference.
For me, it often looked like sitting at the kitchen table with my Bible and a cup of coffee before the day's chaos began. Some days, I read a single verse and let it sink in. Other days, I wrote a quick prayer in a journal, asking God for strength.
It’s not about doing it perfectly—it’s about being intentional.
One morning, I read Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Just sitting with that verse gave me peace in the middle of everything I had to do that day. Taking time to connect with God is something Jesus modeled for us.
Luke 5:16 says, “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.”
If Jesus needed that time, how much more do we?
2. Bring God into Your Everyday Life
Here’s a tip that changed everything for me: you don’t have to wait for a quiet, uninterrupted moment to connect with God.
I started listening to worship music or an audio Bible while unpacking boxes. On my drives to the store or church, I prayed out loud for my new church or asked God for guidance.
I remember unloading kitchen supplies one afternoon while singing along to a worship song. It turned a mundane task into a moment of connection with God. Or there was a time when I prayed during a stressful commute, asking God for patience. Those little moments added up and kept me grounded.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” It’s not about long, formal prayers but about inviting God into every part of your day.
3. Make It Simple
Sometimes, we put too much pressure on ourselves to do everything perfectly. But God doesn’t expect us to check every spiritual box. During this season, I relied on short devotionals and Bible apps that gave me bite-sized scripture to reflect on throughout the day.
Sometimes, my prayer was as simple as, “God, help me today.” And you know what? That’s enough.
One evening, I started a 5-day devotional plan on my Bible app. It took just five minutes a day, but those brief moments of scripture and reflection became a lifeline for me.
4. Lean on Your Community
When life feels overwhelming, it’s so important to let others come alongside you. During our move, friends from our new church brought meals and helped us unpack. Their kindness reminded me that God often works through His people to meet our needs.
One evening, a family came over with dinner and spent some time with us. Although it was a small gesture, it brought a sense of peace to our home. As stated in Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Do not hesitate to seek help or share your prayer needs with others.
Encouragement from Scripture
Here are some verses that brought me comfort during this season:
Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” When everything feels overwhelming, take a moment to pause and remember who is in control.
Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness...” When we put God first, everything else falls into perspective.
Isaiah 40:31: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength...” On my most exhausting days, this verse gave me the hope I needed to keep going.
One night, I sat down with Isaiah 40:31 and prayed, “Lord, I need Your strength.” It wasn’t a long prayer, but it helped me feel renewed and ready to face the next day.
Practical Tools and Resources
If you’re in a busy season, here are some tools that might help:
Bible Apps: YouVersion, ESV, and Dwell are great for devotionals and listening to scripture.
Journaling: Writing down prayers or scriptures can help you process what God is teaching you.
One tool I found especially helpful was an audio Bible app. I’m particularly fond of the ESV Bible App due to its unique selection of voices. Listening to scripture while unpacking or organizing rooms felt like having God’s Word right there with me.
Friend, I know life can feel like a whirlwind sometimes. But God isn’t asking for perfection—He just wants your heart. Take small, consistent steps to connect with Him, and you’ll find He’s right there with you, even in the busyness. This week, try one of these practices. Whether it’s a short prayer, a worship song, or a quick devotional, invite God into your day. You’ll be amazed at how He shows up.
"It’s not about doing it perfectly—it’s about being intentional."
This resonated with me.
Make it simple is such an important, but overlooked step! Thanks for the encouragement.
