Hearing God’s Voice
When I was a young child - probably around five years old - I remember being at church and watching the Associate Pastor and his wife lead our kids' service. They supported each other and I could sense God doing something through them for us. It was a time when I didn’t have a positive married relationship in my life. I remember thinking, “that’s what I want to be when I grow up.”
Ever since that moment, God has continued to bring that dream to pass. Not on my terms, but in His perfect timing.
A few years ago, my wife and I were praying for clarity, seeking God’s guidance about whether we should take a leap of faith into a new ministry role with a church plant. Every option seemed good on the surface, but something just didn’t feel settled in my spirit. We prayed, listened, and waited, but the uncertainty lingered like a fog. One day, after what felt like weeks of silence, I sensed a peace that washed over me during a time of quiet prayer. It wasn’t an audible voice, but there was an undeniable clarity in my heart that pointed the way forward. God had spoken—not with fireworks, but with a gentle assurance that I couldn’t deny.
Many of us have experienced moments like that, where we long to hear God’s voice but feel unsure of how to discern it. We wonder, Does God really speak to me? and How can I be sure it’s Him? The desire to know God’s will is deep within every believer, and hearing from God doesn’t have to be reserved for life-altering decisions. God wants to speak to us every day, in the small moments just as much as the big ones.
1. The Biblical Promise That God Speaks
God has always spoken to His people, and He still speaks to us today. In John 10:27, Jesus says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." This isn’t just a promise for a select few—God desires to speak to all His children. Throughout Scripture, we see God revealing His will to His people in various ways. From Moses and the burning bush (Exodus 3) to Elijah’s still, small voice (1 Kings 19), to Paul’s vision guiding him in his missionary journey (Acts 16), God’s methods are diverse, but His intent is the same: He wants to guide, comfort, and direct us.
Today, God speaks through His Word, the Holy Spirit, our circumstances, and other people. One of the most important truths we can hold onto is that God’s will isn’t some hidden mystery we need to unlock. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding. As we acknowledge Him, He will make our paths straight. Whether it’s a decision about a job, a relationship, or simply how to spend our day, God wants to lead us, and His will is knowable.
2. Preparing Your Heart to Hear God
Hearing God’s voice begins with a posture of surrender. Before we even know what God’s answer is, we must come to Him with a heart that says, “Not my will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Jesus modeled this surrender perfectly in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He laid down His own desires to follow the Father’s will, even though it led to the cross.
But in our noisy world, distractions can cloud our ability to hear God clearly. Psalm 46:10 urges us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” If we’re constantly busy, it’s hard to create space for God to speak. That’s why finding moments of stillness and solitude are crucial. This could mean setting aside time in the morning for quiet prayer, stepping away from the rush of life, or even taking a walk to clear your mind and focus on Him.
Developing a habit of listening is key to growing in your relationship with God. Just like in any friendship or marriage, communication is essential. The more time you spend listening, the more familiar His voice will become. Consider making daily prayer and Bible reading a priority. As you do, you’ll be training your spiritual ears to recognize His voice more clearly.
3. God’s Word: The Primary Way God Speaks
The Bible is the primary way God speaks to us today. It’s His living and active Word, full of truth, wisdom, and direction for every aspect of life. When we approach Scripture, we should do so with the expectation that God will speak through it. James 1:5 encourages us to ask for wisdom, and God will give it generously. Before you open your Bible, take a moment to pray for understanding and to invite God to reveal His will through the words on the page.
One way to hear God through Scripture is by meditating on specific passages that stand out to you. Take time to reflect on what God might be saying through those verses. Journaling is also a great practice—write down your thoughts, what jumps out at you, and any impressions you sense as you read. God often speaks through His Word to guide us in decision-making or to bring comfort and reassurance.
It’s important to remember that anything we believe God is saying should always align with Scripture. If you feel led in a direction that contradicts God’s Word, it’s not from Him. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us, Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, correcting, and training us in righteousness. It’s our ultimate filter for discernment.
4. Recognizing God’s Voice in Prayer
Many of us approach prayer as a one-way conversation—we talk, God listens. But prayer is meant to be a dialogue. In Jeremiah 33:3, God promises, “Call to me and I will answer you.” That means we should expect God to respond when we pray. But we also need to create space to listen.
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in guiding us during prayer. Jesus describes the Spirit as our counselor and guide, leading us into all truth (John 14:26). When you pray, invite the Holy Spirit to direct your thoughts and reveal God’s will. One practical way to listen in prayer is by keeping a journal. Write down any scriptures, impressions, or thoughts that come to mind during your prayer time, then pray over them to discern if they’re from God.
Sometimes, God’s response isn’t immediate. It’s important to wait on Him, trusting that He will answer in His timing. Rushing through prayer without listening for His response can cause us to miss His voice.
5. Discerning God’s Will Through Circumstances and Confirmation
God often speaks through life circumstances. He may open doors or close them, provide unexpected opportunities, or use challenging situations to reveal His will. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” When faced with a decision, pay attention to how God may be leading through the circumstances around you.
Confirmation is another way God reveals His will. Sometimes, He confirms His guidance through Scripture, prayer, or the wise counsel of others. In Judges 6, Gideon asked God for confirmation of His will by using a fleece, and God graciously responded. While we don’t need to set out fleeces like Gideon, we can ask God to confirm His will through multiple means.
Don’t hesitate to seek advice from trusted spiritual mentors or friends. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” God often uses the wisdom of others to confirm His guidance in our lives.
6. Understanding the Peace of God as a Guide
One of the most significant indicators of God’s will is the peace He gives. Philippians 4:7 talks about a peace that surpasses understanding, guarding our hearts and minds in Christ. Even when decisions are difficult, God’s peace will guide us when we’re walking in His will.
It’s important to distinguish between peace and comfort. Just because something is peaceful doesn’t mean it’s easy or without challenge. True peace comes from aligning with God’s will, not from avoiding difficulty. When making decisions, reflect on whether you sense that deep, God-given peace, even if the road ahead seems tough.
7. Developing Confidence in Hearing God’s Voice
Hearing God’s voice is a skill we develop over time. Just as sheep learn to recognize their shepherd’s voice, we grow more confident in hearing God as we spend time with Him. Psalm 32:8 promises that God will guide us and teach us the way to go. Trust that even if you don’t hear perfectly every time, God is faithful to lead you.
If doubt creeps in, remember God’s character and His promises. Trusting in Him, even when we feel unsure, is an act of faith. Over time, you’ll grow more confident in recognizing His voice.
8. Common Misconceptions About Hearing God’s Voice
One common misconception is that God only speaks to “super-spiritual” people. The truth is, God desires to speak to all His children. James 1:5 reminds us that if we ask for wisdom, He will give it generously to all who seek Him.
Another misconception is that hearing God is always a dramatic experience. While God sometimes speaks in dramatic ways, like a burning bush or vision, more often, He speaks in subtle, quiet ways—like the still small whisper Elijah experienced (1 Kings 19:11-13).
Finally, if you don’t hear clearly, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. Sometimes God’s silence is an invitation to seek Him more deeply, or it’s a time of waiting and growth.
For Every Believer
Hearing God’s voice is for every believer. It starts with surrender, spending time in His Word, and listening. This week, take a step to hear Him more clearly—set aside time for quiet prayer, meditate on Scripture, and ask for wisdom. Reach out to a trusted mentor if needed.
God desires to guide you not just in big decisions, but in daily life. He knows you by name, and as you walk with Him, you’ll grow in confidence in recognizing His voice. Trust the process—God isn’t hiding His will from you. He’s waiting to guide you with love.
The real question is: will you create space to listen? Start small this week—pause, be still, and invite God to speak. When He does, trust what you hear.
I’d love to hear your story—have you experienced God’s voice in your life? What helps you discern His guidance? Share in the comments, and if this encourages you, pass it on to others who need the reminder that God is always speaking.
I was reading in Isaiah 55 this morning and the issue of hearing God speak was something I picked up on. I have struggled with this concept most of my life - with varying degrees of 'success'. I then saw your email after my devtions and read it - thank you so much for your encouragement and instruction. WHile I have read a book on the subject, I appreciated your practical, biblically based approach.
Pastor Chris, the spiritual and the practical are both well-represented here and I am grateful for this wonderful reminder. God is always speaking and where I may not be able to see His hand; I can trust His heart and faithfulness in the word to lead me to destiny🙏🏾
