At some point, every believer asks, What am I here for?
We look at our lives, our jobs, our routines, and wonder if we’re missing the bigger picture. We believe our purpose is hidden in a future moment when everything finally comes together.
But here’s the truth. Your calling is not a distant dream. It is alive in the way you love, serve, and worship right now.
Purpose Starts With Relationship
Purpose doesn’t start with activity. It begins with a relationship.
Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, ESV)
Billy Graham once said life’s meaning is found in communion with Christ, not in chasing tasks. Before you run after clarity, run after Him.
Mary and Martha: Presence Over Productivity
Think about Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38–42.
Martha was busy serving, hosting, and keeping everything running. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, listening. Martha grew frustrated. She thought her tasks defined her worth.
But Jesus said, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41–42)
Martha’s work wasn’t wrong. But Mary understood that relationship comes before responsibility.
We often confuse productivity with purpose. We hustle, hoping activity will reveal our calling. But clarity begins with connection.
When you know Him, the rest will flow.
My Early Lesson in Leadership
I had to learn this the hard way.
When I was younger, I sat in a church of over 2,000 people. Everywhere I looked, pastors and leaders were busy. They managed programs, schedules, and systems. It looked impressive.
So when my turn came to lead, I thought I knew what mattered most. I organized. I prepared. I made sure every detail was covered.
But I missed the heart.
Leadership is not born out of skill or logistics. Authentic leadership flows from a relationship with God. Without that, you can run the systems, but you will miss the Spirit.
Leadership on Holy Ground
Moses shows us this same truth.
He grew up in Pharaoh’s palace. He understood power and administration. But when God called him to lead Israel, it was not his resume that qualified him.
It was his willingness to stand barefoot before the burning bush.
It was his dependence on God at the Red Sea when there was no way forward.
It was his hunger to meet with God face to face on the mountain.
Moses reminds us that leadership begins on holy ground, not in the boardroom. It flows from knowing the One who calls you.
Four Steps to Clarify Your Purpose
Step 1: Seek the Lord
Ask Him to search your heart and speak.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!” (Psalm 139:23)
👉 What is God whispering to your heart today?
Step 2: Align Your Desires with His
As you delight in Him, His desires shape yours.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
👉 Which desires align with God, and which distract?
Step 3: Use Discernment
Filter decisions through scripture and godly counsel.
👉 Where are you tempted to follow culture over Christ?
Step 4: Grow in Community
Purpose gets clearer when confirmed with trusted believers.

Myths About Calling (Mistakes to Avoid)
Calling is only for pastors or missionaries.
The truth: Every believer is called to glorify God in their work, family, and community. You need to wait until you’re perfect to step into your calling.
The truth: God often calls imperfect people and shapes them as they walk with Him.Your calling will always be big and glamorous.
The truth: Sometimes the most powerful callings look ordinary—faithfully raising kids, serving in hidden places, or loving your neighbor well. You only get one shot at your calling.
The truth: God is gracious. If you’ve wandered, He can redeem and redirect you.

Questions to Ponder
When have you confused productivity with purpose in your own life?
What “Mary moment” do you need to reclaim in your week?
Which of the myths about calling have you believed, and how does scripture correct it?
Who in your life can help you confirm or encourage your sense of calling?
7-Day Purpose Challenge
If you’re looking for a challenge to grow closer to your purpose, here’s a 7 day challenge that will get you started.
Day 1: Pray Psalm 139:23–24 out loud.
Day 2: Journal about one desire God has placed in your heart.
Day 3: Identify one area where culture tempts you more than Christ.
Day 4: Share your heart with a trusted friend and ask for prayer.
Day 5: Read Jeremiah 29:11 and write down what gives you hope.
Day 6: Take one small step of obedience (serve, encourage, or give).
Day 7: Spend 15 minutes in silence, listening for God’s whisper.
Remember
Your calling is not hidden in a puzzle waiting to be solved. It is found in a Person who already knows your name.
Jesus Himself is your calling, your clarity, and your future.
You were created to glorify God, to reflect His love, and to shine His presence into the world. That’s not someday. That’s today.
Let’s Pray Together
Heavenly Father, draw me closer than my striving ever could. Teach me to treasure Your presence above my performance. Make me bold like Moses, steady like Mary, and faithful in the little things You place before me. May my life reveal that true clarity comes only from knowing You. Amen.

This is beautiful and spiritually grounded and great first steps! For years I prayed for God to reveal His will for my life, and then one day someone pointed out that I was actually praying for His calling, because His will is essentially the same for everyone, but calling is unique for each of us. That distinction was so huge for me, but I still struggled with finding MY calling. God led me to some very cool methods where He revealed some powerful insights that made all the difference, but He is always at the center, exactly where He should be.
Hello Chris, this is SO good 👍. I would recommend that every new convert should read this message.
In my experience in walking with God (over 50+ years), many new converts want to do God's Will but lack the discernment to relax in the Lord and to wait on Him in prayer.
What usually happens next is that they fizzle out and think that the Lord has forsaken them or the call of God wasn't real for them. Then, they sit on the sidelines and sometimes miss what God had intended for them.
May the Church sense this issue and then encourage, pray and teach the new convert to wait on the Lord and teach them what it means to walk in the Spirit.
To God be the Glory. Amen
